It wasn't nearly as good as it should have been. But I say that about a lot of anime. They seemed to spend a lot of time with filler arcs before actually getting down to the point of Hell's Gate, and even then they copped out explaining what was going on. In short, the show looked like it was trying far too hard to be cool and edgy all the way through, and completely failed to be so at any stage other than in the first opening titles: "Now I've lost it, I know I can kill. The truth exists just beyond the gate". Yeah, it isn't much.
