TOKYO — Nintendo Co’s new model of the Nintendo DS portable video game machine, called Nintendo DSi, sold out in Japan within four days of its launch, game magazine publisher Enterbrain Inc reported Wednesday.
Enterbrain put cumulative sales of the DSi machine at 170,779 units as of Sunday, two days after the launch on Saturday. Including reservations, the DSi machines had all vanished from Japan’s store shelves by Tuesday.
The report was based on sales data at 3,500 retailers across the country.
Nintendo, which shipped 200,000 units across the country, plans to ship an additional 100,000 units by the end of this week.
The DSi, which retails for 18,900 yen, features improved audio quality and a screen that is larger than that of the existing DS model. It allows users to take pictures and play music.
The DSi will be launched overseas next spring at the earliest.
