TOKYO — A man in his 60s from Yokohama city has developed symptoms of rabies after being bitten by a dog while in the Philippines in August, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported Wednesday. The report of the man who is now in critical condition at a Yokohama hospital follows the death on Friday of a man from Kyoto, also in his 60s, which was the first confirmed case of rabies in Japan since 1970.
The Kyoto man was also bitten by a dog in the Philippines in August, according to the ministry. The Yokohama man was bitten on the right wrist in August in the Philippines, where he lived for about two years, the ministry said. He returned to Japan on Oct 22 and complained of flu-like symptoms on Nov 15.
