A NEW Zealand teenager who axed her mother to death as she watched TV soap Coronation Street has been sentenced to life in prison.
Bonny McIntyre was 16 last November when she went to her mother's house and hit her a dozen times about the head and neck with an axe as she sat in her lounge watching television.
At the time, her 15-year-old brother was in a nearby room.
He did not hear the attack but later found his mother, Moera McIntyre, dead in a pool of blood.
As McIntyre was sentenced in the High Court at Christchurch today, family members gave victim impact statements and spoke directly to her, saying: "Look at what you have done to us. Do you know what you have done to our family?"
Several times she responded saying "I don't know".
Name suppression was lifted at the request of the family.
