Re: THE SUMMER 2010 THREAD

noitaminA struggled to find its feet to begin with. Its first four titles: Honey & Clover, Paradise Kiss, Ayakashi Tales of Japanese Horror and Jyu Oh Sei, were so far apart in style, subject matter and quality it is hard to believe that it survived. But the college student viewership for seinen and josei helped it get on track and it has been running ever since, the longest lasting dedicated anime broadcasting block. And for something that airs past midnight, it gets decent ratings, so the sponsors are happy, and the studio is even happier if the dvd sales go reasonably well, such as with Eden of the East.
The reason why Anime no Chikara failed, despite having a fourth show lined up to follow Occult Gakuin (where is that production going, now?), was because the second title failed to meet expectations. You can be as adventurous as you like, but if the show, itself, is not good, and Senkou no Night Raid was pretty mediocre for a good half of its episodes (and I had extremely high hopes for it before it screened.... I was expecting it to be the show of the season, and I have to give that title to the noitaminA series Tatami Galaxy) then the problem is more one of a lack of talent behind the scenes needed to pull this sort of thing off.
The fact that Senkou no Night Raid remains one of the few series of its season to not be complete, in terms of subs available on the net, speaks volumes. Even the fansubbers didn't like it that much. Don't get me wrong, though; I'd much rather they try and fail with something like this than to shovel more of the poorly-realised otaku-bait horseshi.t on us that they have been doing, recently (hello Angel Beats).
