One very sorry anime fan....

by Dhumahn » Sat Aug 25, 2007 1:16 pm

This one was dated as the 14th of August, but I just had to put it here, as Ryan always has a go at stuff like this...

From Anime News Network

"Australia Fines Man for Importing Pornographic Anime

22-year-old pleads guilty after customs find child pornography anime, games

In Australia, a man has plead guilty to four charges in connection with importing anime and Japanese videogames that included child pornography and depicted scenes of sexual violence. 22-year-old Bao Peng Lim, who will be fined $A9,000, could have been sentenced to as much as ten years in prison.

As Lim was entering Australia on a flight from Singapore in April 2006, customs officers searched Lim's luggage and found eight DVDs containing anime child pornography. A search of his house turned up another 14 DVDs. According to customs official Richard Janeczko, all images of offensive sexual conduct — including child pornography, whether actual or drawn/animated — are prohibited from being brought into the country under Australian laws such as the 1956 Customs (Prohibited Import) Regulations."

We have been warned!!!

That name and age sounds eerily familiar to me... they didn't happen to say what state he's from? If it is the same guy, I knew he was kind of weird but would have never guessed he was into that sort of thing... serves him right and proves the point about just who you meet in chat rooms.

well, that means certain people should probably take appropriate measures in order to guard themselves against such problems. of course, certain people are unlikely to have such issues

Let's all make sure this doesn't go the way of a certain recent thread in the general section.
Mel Gibson's remake of The Life of Brian is nowhere near as funny as the original.

if it does, then those people have a chance of being just like this guy, so i'm sure few people would be stupid enough to get involved in this discussion in the wrong way

I'm just wondering if I should pre-emptively post the Bunnymobile again...

I don't think that'd work, especially when Baz is around.

Thanks I finally now know Greg it is illegal to have any LA or of drawn quality of children is procative and sexual poses.

Now I can talk on this freely, which I was falsely accused of starting an argument when I was asking a proper question in general accused so we have an actual law which was put in way back in 1965 and for the love of god I was referring to the article in that Advertiser on the 22 of AUG which we should all be reading just in case if something like this pops up.

Is the actual news article which someone got done

Ah! It won't actually I was asking this very same question in a general thread which I got prompted 2 strikes. Unlike the argument about a controversial and political issue which that thread was, this is more or less set in stone, I doubt any would or ever defend child pornography and pedos. (Its similar to a certain other issue about a certain other device which you are getting edible_hat that is a BLACK and WHITE issue).

to Pirate Man: I heard about that on Radio National recently, it's not just "we inherited the US laws", there are sound reasons behind banning all forms of child porn:

-people who possess drawn child porn sooner or later (usually) move onto looking for live photos and/or videos
-possession of photos creates demand, even if you don't trade with others
-supply increases to fill the demand
-as supply increases, child abuse increases

to Edible Hat: too fast I was correcting a few things cause it didn't show up properly and I was wrong since the law has been in effect since 1965.

Ah but the line of reasoning is the same lines scam artists and thieves and crooks and it does make sense.

-people who steal small items (usually) would go on to steal bigger items
-selling them cheaply creates demand, even if you don't sell them
-supply increases to fulfill the demand
-as supply increases, more ppl suffer from stealing :)

It reminds me more of a business, what happens when it gets popular :).

um... what?

Jokes aside, I should have said "downloading creates demand..." rather than possession.

With regards to stolen goods, second hand dealers have ID checks that supposedly discourage selling stolen goods to them and make it easier to catch the thieves. Plus I believe a search of the relevant literature will show that a lot of theft is done to feed drug habits or organised crime.

With regards to certain unofficial accessories for certain gaming devices, those are legal because you can run homebrew apps on them (so far I've downloaded a homebrew diagnostic program and a drum machine program). Similar to modding consoles to remove region coding. Many a court has ruled that once you own a physical device, you can modify it or use whatever third party accessories you want. (the one that comes to mind was the guy who was found guilty of selling pirated PS2 games but the charges of selling modchips were thrown out)

*snip*

Your getting a little OT here and I'm agreeing with you thus why I put that little understanding and analogy (possession is the correct term, you don't own it if your downloading it :)). To clarify: if you do steal/download something and keep it rather than sell it hence your just as guilty (say if someone the steals and keeps our car) + the sensible person wouldn't sell to a pawn shop.

Second part (you already know that we discussed it): wasn't referring to the legal aspects.

Yeah, it's late and I'm tired and therefore like to argue about nothing.

We're in agreement that certain things sometimes associated with otaku culture are Bad Things and laws are there for Good Reasons.

Is there anything in the Otaku Culture forum that can't be considered a bad thing?
