AJAS Meetings - What's it like?

by ~shinigami~ » Sun May 04, 2008 7:23 pm

I'm very tempted to go to these AJAS meetings one day (when I stop struggling at uni work T_T). Would you guys tell me what these AJA meetings are like? Also, is it over run with males? ^^"

Imagine a bar. Except instead of loud jocks, it's full of loud nerds. :)

There are a handful of girls that pop up intermittently. Problem is they are escorted without exception or exemption.

We also have Jesus.

A couple of the hardcore members such as Ryan, Mappy, Barron and myself often appear as early as 4:30pm on the screening nights. Standard fare is talking rubbish for 90 minutes before migrating to the appropriate theater. Knowing a bit about computers will help you get into most conversations easily. Seeing as you know a bit about Skylines, you can get into conversations with me and that other guy with the pony tail who was interested in Shana whose name I never thought to ask. 8)

...and then there's the actual screening. We play 8 shows back-to-back from 6pm to approx. 9:15pm. Expect the projector to fail at around the 8pm mark. It does the same thing every single week.

Standard theater rules apply here. STFU when the shows are playing, but general etiquette allows for discussion during the ED of a show. Uh, no eating. Ryan gets very angry when that happens. I remember the last time, I was the one who got lumped with removing the blood stains. Not fun. So please, don't eat. :)

Last time I went to an anime club with all males, there was a lot of touching which I wasn't comfortable with but when there are girls there, they don't do that stuff so I'm just making sure.

Dunno what you mean by "escorted" but as long as these girls are there to prevent the guys from going all "male locker room" on each other, I'm fine.

Jesus? Blood stains?

Sounds pretty cool, I'll definitely come to these meetings some time in the future. Seeing that most series are already at least a few episodes in, would I be totally lost?

Unless you're a girl, then you have nothing to worry about. :)

Yeah, Jesus and bloodstains. (mad) looks just like Jesus and Ryan likes guns and tools of torture and so on. Welcome to the club.

A few of our shows will be finishing soon, so you'll have something to watch right from the start. The shows that are only a few episodes in are fairly easy to catch up on, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem. If worse comes to worse, ask about the shows before/after the screening. :)

Note that the two people who posted before me are generally ignored at AJAS to the nth degree and fade away back into their primordial state. And I think Ras still ahsn't been forgivien for introducing them to AJAS. But Ras is alright.

While I'm at it, I'd like to thank the guys at AJAS for putting up with me for over a year so far.

Yes, do explain.

Also, looking forward to seeing you there sometime. When you see me, you'll know me as "that strange guy behind the desk". Either that or some other bizzare term.... 8)

There is only one person (who shows up every now and again) that you must worry about. You will find out in due time.... :P

He's also the gawky looking guy who is usually holding a box of DVD's. :P

You'll recognise Bazza instantly, and I'm the guy who sits next to him, usually talking loudly with other people at AJAS. I also sometimes have my girlfriend or other random friends with me. :)

That is true. Having the largest legit collection in the club kinda makes me feel "special"

I'm one of only two regular members who have ponytails. I also generally procrastinate at shaving. So look for the weird hairy guy with the bucket hat. Thats me.

I also quit a job because the boss wanted me to work on a Tuesday night and risked being murdered to bring mai imouto along. Which means I attend pretty much every week without fail (so to speak).

True, I guess I'll just catch up on them at home before I go to one of these meetings.

The ones run by all-boys where they resort to "male locker room" antics which included a lot of grabbing of places on the human body, in a totally non-gay way of course is what they say.

I'm looking forward to meeting all the great anime fans at AJAS too. I don't think I'll be able to make it to any meetings any time soon though, lotsa assignments due and stuff that I'm way behind on.

I can assure you that at AJAS, you probably won't experience anything of any great horror, other than Bazza and the occasional appearance of Madman. All the really strange people are gone, now. 8) Says he who is in denial about his age.

Didn't Madman get V&? I thought thats why he hasn't shown his face around for a while now. I even got him a "Congratulations on release from jail" cake -which believe me - was not easy to get. :(

The only difference between me and him is that I'm not into minderjährigen mädchen (I prefer goth-, maid- and trap- shows). I also like a dose of high-end ecchi from time to time.

Liking traps is almost a prerequisite for being a member.

Don't worry. You might not have any interest in them now but anime has an uncanny ability to make people question their sexuality. I started out as a fair-dinkum curves-loving pub-on-friday-night kind of bloke. Now look at me.

For example, the girl in my avatar is actually a guy.

Lets hope the powers that be decide to play Bible Black-ke in the near future, so you may experience the wonder that is Mako-chan. :)

Reminds me of the most "lolwut?" moment that happened to me last Thurday. I was walking to the Library while this Asian person walks out of the security office and I, with all my brain power, could not distinguish this person's gender. Face, clothes, body; nothing gave it away.

It's nice to see the forum nice and lively.

I check in every 76.5 seconds all day and there was perhaps 2 posts for the entire 48 hour preceding shin's appearance. Then we get something in the order of 100 posts in 120 minutes. 8)

Also, we desperately need the car talk in the gothloli thread split. I know you're reading this Mappy.

We need a section purely for talking about cars while we're at it. >_>

And welcome to my life, I have too much to do at TAFE to even think about watching anime at home. I had to tell my Wednesday lecturer that I'd probably be half-asleep in the morning due to AJAS the previous night.

I'm the guy that convinces the occasional female to tag along with me to AJAS. No wonder you don't remember me, the kind I bring along don't interest you, although they are warned to keep their distance.

Are we free to leave early? Because I don't wanna be dead for my morning lectures. Hmm...I'm very tempted to check out these meetings.

So who usually turns up? Atory, Bazza and Phil; I'm guessing you guys are regulars. It'd be great to meet you guys. ^_^

Yes you can leave early if you wish. Just don't do it during the climax of a show or you will get shot.

You can leave any time you like, just make sure it's in the credits of a show so you don't annoy anyone. :)

Normally we have around 20 people (correct me if I'm wrong someone) rock up, some times up to around 30. Most people there are friendly and talkative, but you get the odd couple who like to keep to themselves the whole night.

I was annoyed by him, too. I think it was the constant getting up and walking in and out of the room, often walking in front of the screen, in between the changing of seats, that annoyed me.
He also mumbled to himself a lot, which meant I felt no compulsion to make contact with him and find out wtf he was doing....

What the hell happened in the last few hours...

Man, let the guy make his own impression when he comes. Don't scare him off or taint/prejudice him. It's not what we're about and it's not something to be proud of. We're supposed to be about providing an environment for people to watch anime where they can feel safe and be in the company of other decent anime fans.

Putting people off, scaring women or looking down on others - that's nothing to laugh about.

Now can we just be civil?

shinigami, hope you come soon and that you enjoy what you see. We're not the most sociable or attractive bunch of people but we're decent and harmless enough once you get to know us.

That said, I know and understand why Atory prefers to attend UniSAGA rather that AJAS these days. Thankfully a resident Yoda in Mappy exists.

I'm definitely interested in coming and I can't wait to meet the people of AJAS. I'm sure I can't come this week though or next week for that matter. Maybe in 3 weeks time? Gosh, that sounds like a pretty long time. =(

Who said I prefer UniSAGA over AJAS? I enjoy both equally, the only difference is that UniSAGA is my child and I have to be there to look after it.

That may be a decent time to come actually. That's around when series will be ending and new ones will be on the way.

Well Atory, I think people have come to appreciate that as one of my best and worst qualities. Furthermore, I know your studies take priority and that you do well in them, pity that the timing in the week isn't always good.

Okay, who let Bazza make first contact to a newbie?

Shinigami, welcome to AJAS. Feel free to rock up any time you want while the screening is happening and leave whenever you feel like it. We hold a vote for every show at the end of it's 5th episode to determine if it should stay on the playlist.

As far as I can remember, I have only ejected one person from an AJAS meeting because they didn't want to acknowledge the "No food in the theatre" rule. If I find out about member being touched in an inappropriate fashion during an AJAS session the offender should consider breathing to be a privilege and not a right.

Well apparently Shinigami knows Bazza, White.

Hi, welcome again, I turn up on rare occasions as my Taekwondo classes clashes with AJAS sessions sadly ( I train on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the occasional Saturday Mornings) But I will try to arrange to attend AJAS sometime in the next few weeks now that I'm better and all, and if my head instructor would allow me to do so.

also I must apologize, I initally thought you was a male at first because of your knowing Bazza. sorry!

I had never met shinigami before last night.

I assumed shinigami was a guy. Am I incorrect?

I've never met a girl who drives a Skyline and knows her way around the tuner scene... :?

Well his tastes made me think shinigami was a guy. I didn't get any female vibes.

Perhaps shinigami is the one who will restore order to The Force. :) Because Bazza certainly did the opposite.

Well, shinigami's tastes sound like a guy's, but if you look at the way shinigami is expressing itself on the forum (the language used), you could say that it could be a girl. Maybe this could be the person who could keep even Ryan in check. 8)

There's one rule and one quote applicable.

1. All internet users are to be considered men unless proven otherwise by issuance of timestamped brüste."

"The internet. Where men are men, women are men and children are FBI."

:)

Also, remember what I said about a lack of decent Skylines in my part of town. There's only one female owned Skyline in the area and it falls under the stupid ricer category.

Yep, I do Taekwondo, at the moment I train at West Lakes Shore, behind the Bartley Tavern (formerly known as the legtrap) with Rutten Taekwondo. Previously, before I joined Rutten Taekwondo, I trained with Rhee but it was a bit too far for me to get to the centres easily, especially when my grandfather got sick with emphysema as he used to give me lifts to the taekwondo centres in woodville and port adelaide as most buses to (or close enough to) where I used to live doesn't run after 7pm, and there were issues with my old regional instructor such as not liking the fact that I'm deaf or that I need to lipread people.

So there you go!

Believe me, you're doing pretty damn well so far. You've caused a titan of a thread, you've stimulated the most interest/discussion in ages and you're honest. :) Besides, if White is already on the defensive for you to ward away those who would taint you. I'd say you're doing somthing right.

Those don't exist. At least not in the western suburbs. Or nothern suburbs. Or eastern suburbs. Or the CBD. I think there's one in the southern suburbs but I've only heard about it, haven't seen it for myself.

Remember, this is Adelaide, where a recent report said the only difference between our roads and those in Bahgdad is that we have less gunfire (although after what happened last weekend, that seems to be changing...)

Sure they exist. I'm one of them. Despite having every tosspot in his hektik VK Calais try to drag me from the lights I still consider myself to be a decent and respectable driver. I always make sure to obey the KEEP CLEAR signs near street lights and I always let the bus in and I most times wave pedestrians across any predefined crossing I approach.

I will however admit to doing the odd stupid thing such as speeding or popping a doughie or something, but I tend to do those when the only person I can injure is myself. It's really tempting traveling down RAAF road with those truck-friendly round-a-bouts at 2Am in the morning after a heavy downpour.

That being said, people like me are few and far between within the entire city. The average speed for traffic flow down Salisbury Highway is about 65-70kph. I was trundling along at exactly 58kph and had more or less every single car pass me at much, much more then +2kph. :x

You can still get done for

    Dangerous driving,
    Creating excess noise via throttle,
Deliberately breaking traction of one or more drive wheels - I've seen people done for that because the tyre slipped on the fat white line.

I remember, a good decade ago, my old man getting booked doing 180kph just outside Forbes in NSW. Suffice to say, for the rest of that trip he set the cruise control to 100kph and only ever went over that to pass trucks....

And suffice to say this ain't got nothing to do with AJAS meetings or anime, so....

So I actually went to the AJAS meeting tonight. :)

So who was who?

Anyways, it was nice but you guys must be tough or something but watching that many episodes in a row was like a marathon. I wish there was more discussion or talk though.

You weren't that asian-looking person that was there before the meeting?

and yes, it is a marathon, but a lot of us are used to it, and can do playlists that are much longer.

I have personal playlists of 26 episodes, each from a different show. My power level is escaping, here.... Must suppress. Must suppress....

Anyways, we do hang around a bit after the meetings, and talk a bit before. Don't be scared to jump right in. I'm the gnarly, overweight old guy of the group. You should be able to spot me straight away. 8)

I couldn't really hang around though, it was 9:30pm and I have uni the next day, with work due. :(

Yep, mandatory argument between the two Ryans. If we don't have one at some point, the universe begins to derail. Compulsory part of the space-time continuum.

I did think you were the Asian. We used to have several. But Psike and Stormy had to go back. -_-

If I remember correctly, AJAS continues through holidays in the year and only stops for the Christmas Holidays.

I thought I knew who you were, but I wasn't sure and didn't want to call out your forum handle just in case it wasn't you. :P

Me and Bazza hang around each other most of the time at AJAS. He's got long hair that is usually tied up in a ponytail, wears a bucket hat 24/7, and usually has a jacket with a checkered-like pattern on it. I've recently had my hair cut, so it's really short, I always have a blue school bag with me, and most of the time I am wearing a black/brown jumper. :)

You have this slightly skewed. Michael Barron, the club's secretary was the person making the announcement. I was the person telling Mendes to shut up or leave and if he thinks of talking back to me again when asked to be quiet for an announcement he can feel free to amend his behaviour.

Where can I park? All i can think of at the moment is parking on Victoria Drive then taking a big walk up to the building(s)... Sorry, but I don't know that part of the campus, or the surrounding area much...

The road that is directly behind the Adelaide Uni Campus, flanked by the Torrens on the other side, would be your best bet.

Or, if you want your car to still be there when you get back... there is an underground carpark on North Terrace right in front of the uni building. It costs a flat $5 to park there but you can stay as long as you want and there is a decent chance your car will remain there.

Although in all honesty you may as well catch a bus, assuming there's a half decent service near your place of residence of course. I may just be getting spoiled by the O-Bahn, but its just so much easier walking + bussing to AJAS than driving through Adelaide, which I actually quite strongly dislike doing, as there is no room for doridori or hektik skids.

If you don't know what busses service your local area me and Rasberry will gladly assist you. The Admet website is quite useless.

Stolen? How likely is that? My car has a kill switch so I'm 99% sure it wont be going far... and I'm not too eager to give up my precious money... unless it's worth it?

Otherwise I could probably catch a bus easily. I wouldn't mind driving though, as it would only be about a minute and a half of actually driving in the city.

You live in Modbury. Catch the O-Bahn. It's faster, cheaper and less stressful than driving.

You may even run into me and Phill. We both trek back to Redwood Park every week.

The J1/2/3 and M44 routes depart the stop outside the hospital at 15 minute intervals, making the return trip quite painless. You can catch just about any city-bound bus from T.T.P and get put within walking distance to AJAS.

We don't know that. As far as any of us are aware he/she has absolutely normal interests.

Don't go grouping people in with me just because I reply to a post they made on the forum. Seriously, the joke expired a long time ago. It's just getting stupid now.

In any case, Sufferes, which buses will you be taking? For the record, Phill and I use the 541/J3 route. I can show you the stops required if you so desire. :)

I live walking distance from Tea Tree Plaza and I catch any bus from the Interchange that goes to the city via the O-bahn. Easy said, easy done. J- and 54- buses are your best bet to and from, although the 271 can also get you to your destinations albeit with a longer trip.

I live within walking distance of bus stops on Kelly Road and *EDIT: Macintyre* Road, so I'm most willing to catch buses from there. Or I could go park at the Plaza or Paradise interchange and catch a bus from there, but there is still the potential worry over my car...

What times do the buses from the Plaza leave?

You'd be on the 506 route then. I lived just down the hill opposite the primary school for a while. 8)

506 departs Paradise interchange at 9:50 and 10:20pm. You'll want the 9:35 or 10:05 J1G buses from zone I2 outside the Royal Adelaide Hospital. It takes all of 2 minutes to walk from AJAS to the hospital.

The only problem for me concerning coming next week is how many assignments I have... If I can get a large amount done on the weekend it should be okay but motivation for this kind of thing isn't my strength  can anyone offer any words of wisdom?

Also, where does everyone congregate before the session? I've never been to this campus before, so I'm worried I'm not going to be able to find the room  or is finding the room straightforward?
