We're killing the industry...no you are Smith!

by Last Exile » Tue Dec 18, 2007 2:37 am

http://www.activeanime.com/html/content/view/2171/36/

Interview with one of the head honchos of the GDH conglomerate and has a link to a recent interview on the same issue with Shinichi Wanatabe.

After reading this, I haven't changed my stance one bit. The growth of the industry outside of Japan has reached a saturation point and anime is a niche market. And the state of the anime being released over the last 3 years has declined quite markedly.

Furthermore, any true anime fan still contributes to the industry. I've spent a couple of thousand dollars on my manga series, I own a few series on DVD, I have several figures and several artbooks. I'm certainly not taking without giving anything back.

I simply get the feeling people in shoes like his are panicking from the fallout of Geneon collapsing.

And a final important note - sales money from DVDs outside of Japan DOESN'T go to the anime industry in Japan at all! It goes solely to those who licensed them! The animators, directors and studios are having it tough because once they sell the license, THAT'S ALL THEY GET! The licensers get the rest! If he really cares about the industry that much, give a bigger piece of the pie, at least ANY, to those making anime in Japan! Shinichiro Wanatabe, Matoko Shinkai, Satoshi Kon, Yoshitoka Abe - they've never had much money yet continue to strive to produce great works and do. I don't see the companies giving them any real help.

Absolute load of crap this guy is spinning. The true issue is the licensing itself. Start spreading the profits to the industry itself or you're digging your own grave, Smith.
Disgusting...

Just the head of Gonzo in the US having a big BAAAAWWWWWWWW.

If those who licenced anime bothered to put some effort into making the final product attractive (ie releasing them somewhere within a year of their screening, rather than making us wait ages for something we'll never get to see on local tv, both here and in the US; making the production quality of the releases worthwhile and not having them be inferior than fansubs and dvd rips in both translation, picture and sound quality), I might start buying things more often than I do. I own over a hundred commercial anime dvds, and a number of them have died (degraded the moment they were introduced to air :x ) within months of my buying them. Excuse me for not being entirely enthusiastic about throwing money away for no good return.

Sometimes I wonder if buying DVD's is worth it, then I look at the quality of DVD's from Madman, and the quality of US releases, and I end up buying the US release because they have a much lower fail rate (1 from 158 US DVDs, compared to 11 from 98 DVDs from Madman). Then again, having a large DVD collection makes some people go "me want!!!".

The special edition Haruhi boxes were pretty DO WANT, which makes the Madman release just look pathetic....

Lucky Star will have the same sort of thing in the States.... That combined with some other large purchases will be a huge drain in the pocket...

Mr Smith seems to be too quick to blame fansubbers for his problems. There was a study done a couple of months ago that proved that people who pirated music were more likely to purchase. There have been a number of anime series that I have wished to purchase their official releases but upon seeing the quality of the goods and the contempt shown to the consumer I decided that my money could go elsewhere. Do what Barron does, send money directly to the person responsible for the anime.

I'm questioning the cost of DVDs now, ATM they are all $30+ who would want to pay that much for overpriced DVDs. Overpriced??? Of course, I can go down the line and name recent movies that have been released that cost around $10 now. 300, Casino Royale, Spiderman 3 all those released this year and are having mass price cuts also a few series from recent day TV, let alone most of the US TV are now distributed freely on the net (DEXTER & HEROES for example). It's nice to see businesses blaming everyone else but themselves believing that the world is static and doesn't change - hence why Genon imploded, its the companies fault that they can't change and adapt to the current present day situation, just because they are unwilling to change doesn't mean the whole world should stop for them. Besides the Blu-Ray/HD discs are out there is no reason why we should be paying this much :(.

That's why I did not ask for dvds of latest movies etc for christmas because POTC3 was 30 dollars and I didnt want to inflict that on anyone (I bought for myself), I chose to ask for maybe an anime movie or part of an anime series if someone in edible hat's or mine family wanted to get me a dvd, because of the silly prices. (and sadly no one's crossed anime movies or series off my list, but at least I'm getting jelly belly jelly beans, like I requested- thats the only kind of jelly beans I like to eat.)

The opening song is changed from 1 minute and 20 seconds to 45 seconds.

After the actual opening, a scene that lasts 3 1/2 minutes showing Sena's acceptance to Deimon and his first encounter with Hiruma and Kurita is deleted. This might be since kids don't have to qualify for high school in America. (3:45- 7:15)

The punch that knocks Sena down is changed to him getting pushed down. The scene where the Huh Huh brothers tell Sena they are going to frame Kurita with one bat is deleted along with flashbacks from earlier and them taking his phone. Roughly 1 minute and 35 seconds of edits occur here.

Hiruma imagining Sena as Eyeshield 21 when he's running for the train is shown only once. In the original it's shown three times. Hiruma jumping onto the back of the Huh Huh!'s and celebrating Sena's touchdown is also deleted- Roughly 45 seconds of edits.

About 25 seconds of Hiruma showing various guns are deleted.

The closing song, lasting 1 minute and 15 seconds, is deleted.

The :30 next episode preview is deleted.

Hiruma blackmailing the Huh Huh's with a poster at the end of the episode is also deleted (lasts 10 seconds).

Ep 2 edits:

Intro- 1 minute, 20 seconds

The closing song- 1 minute, 15 seconds

The conclusion is only 45 seconds instead of 1 minute 15 seconds.

Did 4kids manage to get a hold of this or summat?

Sounds like its being raped.

scheiße man, scheiße...

I thought it was a simply american football anime, how did they manage to rape ti so badly??? HOW???

I can't believe this.

Mamori shopping with friends is deleted- 30 seconds

I lol'd pretty hard.

I never really enjoyed the anime nearly as much as the manga, but it wasn't that bad.

As such, I don't like how it's getting RAPED.

Ep1. Edits

I this even real? Ca anybody show an example pls

A dub as bad, or even, worse than 4kid's One Piece??

MADNESS!

why they do this

Kurita's actual slow running is edited.
Hiruma's run takeoff is edited.
Kurita & Hiruma discussing Sena's running is deleted. The time shown on his run is the time of his second run, and his second run while being chased by Cerberos is deleted.- Roughly 1 minutes and 15 seconds

Holy scheiße

Man this stuff is good.

Maybe they should edit out the uniforms because in regular Amerikkkan high schools they don't wear uniforms

lol Americans

PicMaybe they'll edit this out.\

Sena makes himself taller? oh shi!

I'm crying now

At least in the manga, Hiruma has guns. Lots of guns.

Anyone keep the rip link earlier? Barring that, it should be on Toonami Jetstream.

Eyeshield? More like Shitsux 21 lulz.

aww, it says only Amerikkans can watch it. Guess they don't want anyone else to see how much they butchered it.

LOL Toonami

ITT we wonder how Americans can't even tolerate American Football and Automatic Rifles.
They're as American as Apple Pie.

BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

The correct line at this point should be, "sena, did you get bigger", and then, hardcore sex.

The op's BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

Fuuuuck

It really is bad.

OH ficken NO
NO GOD NO
YOU ARE THE WORST OP SONG EVER
Eyeshield 21 is actually good.

stupid wannabe rockstars.

Is it as bad as

YO HO HO HE TOOK A BITE OF GUM GUM

I've seen the original, then I see this. Amerikkans.

Wow, that's utter verdammt scheiße. I feel bad for Eyeshield 21, and I never liked the garbage in the first place.

wow... just wow.
I mean, at least the Korean OP was similar. How the hell did this happen?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHYzDjIDwJY

after Seeing the quality of dubs lately, cannot wait to see the american version of nanoha

CAN'T UNSEE

Picmy reaction

Wow.

That's... really good.
I'm kind of ashamed to be an American right now.
Of course, I'm also half-Korean, so I'm also kind of proud.

Picmy reaction

It's kind of hilarious how much better this is than the official dub--bad reverb, clear latino accent, sometimes off-beat lyrics and all.

PicSaber! is it really that bad?!

99-0 loss changed to a 99-0 win

Wait, WHAT?

yeah, what was the point of sena being recruited?

That was my reaction, too. Anyone know more about that?

after Seeing the quality of dubs lately, cannot wait to see the american version of nanoha

You're an evil person yet I too wish to witness it.

Pic
PicThat's it, I hope this verdammt fails hard. The animu's scheiße, but holy ficken, NO anime has to go thru this.

;_; Poor E21, a good shounen mango don't deserve this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8xbXSEyr2s&feature=related

My eyes! cure it with awsome!

DO NOT WANT

+1 for the "Uses fansubs the way they are supposed to be used" club.

I bought Shana after watching it here. Most of my other DVD/Mango I bought after watching subs on my own time.

The problem is almost nobody licenses things that are →good←.

Hidamari Sketch, iDOLM@STER Xenglossia, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Manabi Straight. Just a couple of the shows that I would definitely import if they were given an R1 release. Theres a whole spindle full of other shows I would like to buy but can't be bothered fishing them out to identify. 8)

Perhaps if Anime DVD companies paid some attention to their primary consumer base (ie. otaku and weeaboo) and stopped trying to sell to normal people they might actually get somewhere. More gimmicks and gadgets = moar sales. Also, if each company hired one goon to lurk /a/ all day they would very easily discover what would sell well. 8)

Since no-one has mentioned it. I find the release schedual a real turn off, combined with some discs having only 3 episodes. I don't think it is very good that most series can take a year to collect all the episodes. The reason usually given for delays, the dubbing, is just so lame (Like the acting).

In South East Asia they have the right idea. Sure the quality can be bad and the Subbing terrible, or openly stollen from fans, but they are cheap and have plenty of episodes in each set. I agree that the prices are steep. Hell I can buy a whole season of Small Ville from JB for $30.

I didn't know that they gave so little back to the studios in Japan. Makes you wonder where all the money went...

For edited Anime I have a simple formula I use to make purchasing decisions. If "Good = Yes"; then Buy if "Edited = no"; else boycott = permanant.

I always hear that the high license fees are what keep a lot of titles from being released stateside...
