Afro Samurai on MTV

by Atory » Sun Aug 12, 2007 8:33 pm

For those who were interested in this show and have cable, MTV just aired the first episode. I'm guessing it will be on each Sunday at 8:30pm EST.

A lot of the Digital/Cable channels have started airing more anime. Current and recent title include:

ABC2: Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy
SciFi: Samurai X
MTV: Afro Samurai
Cartoon Network: Bleach, Eureka 7, Trinity Blood, InuYahsa, Full Metal Alchemist, Initial D, GITS:SAC.

You've also got Toonami's selection but who cares about them?

CN's and MTV's sudden surge of anime is thanks to Madman (Company).

Don't forget Pokemon or One Piece or whatever the latest 4Kids travesty is on channel 10 in the mornings!
Mel Gibson's remake of The Life of Brian is nowhere near as funny as the original.

I think SBS daring to show GITS: SAC and Samurai Champloo in full got the ball rolling though.

Hence... Who cares what's on Toonami... (Note: Channel 10 airs the shows that are on CN's Toonami about 1 - 2 months later).

SBS never showed Samurai Champloo in its entirety. Well at least not to my knowledge.

Yeah, it seemed to just sort of end halfway through.

The series was about the journey, not the ending. The ending was never an issue or meant to mean anything.

It wasn't about A to B, it was about A to Z to Q to Y to U to I to O to P to X to S to E to G to F to D to H to W to R to T to J to M to N to C to V to J to K to L to B.

I'm not saying that there was anything wrong with the way Champloo ended. It just.... did. A kind of subversion of the traditionally badly-handled endings most animes have.

Silly question for you Mappy (or anyone else who might be inclined to answer): are there any series which end with "All of a sudden, and for no apparent reason, the world blew up and everybody died" (or similar)?

Underlying moral of the story, don't piss off or stress out any doomsday devices with a personality.

By the sound of it that doesn't count because the end of the world is related to the plot. I mean something where the writers got bored and couldn't think of a decent ending so they killed everybody off.

Gilgamesh comes close to what you describe. The Ideon, as well. Most of The Ideon was ripped off by Gainax for Der Krieg. The original Gall Force ends with everyone dying, even though it wasn't exactly necessary.... I just think Artmic didn't want to have to make any more oavs.

I'd come up with more shows that do this, but most of them have probably been erased from my memory by years of substance abuse. 8)

As I said, pretty much everything that happened in Der Krieg, tv series, movies et al, was ripped off from The Ideon. Which was pretty spiffy for 1980.

Adult Swim's new line up as of next Monday (FMA has finished for about the 3rd time):

10:00 Bleach (Mon-Tue), Eureka 7 (Wed-Thu)
10:30 Black Cat (Mon-Thu)
11:00 Trinity Blood (Mon-Thu) (Now repeating)
11:30 Inuyasha (Mon-Thu) (Should now be un-aired episodes)

Also, an episode of Afro Samurai was on MTV today, so I don't know what the schedule for that is.

Solty Rei may be on Adult Swim soon too as Madman are advertising it in the breaks.

It probably wouldn't be so bad if the shows they were airing weren't MOTR to begin with.... Though I suppose that dose of average accurately reflects the standard Cartoon Network audience.

What's MOTR?

It's whatever Madman want to air now to get sales up.
