The first great moment in anime, for me, was in the first Kimagure Orange Road movie, where Kyousuke finally tells Hikaru he prefers her "best friend" Madoka. (Well, back then every male anime fan did. ) A scene that was 48 tv and 8 oav episodes in the making.... The fallout was more painful than the ending of KimiGa.

If ever there was a moment where something could have lead to a School Days kind of ending during the 80's, this was it.

There are more moments.... I'll have to think about them, though.
