How many people understand the jokes in Lucky Star?

by stormy001 » Thu Jun 14, 2007 12:45 pm

Be honest, a lot of humor in Lucky Star is not familiar to non Japanese speakers. I myself miss a lot of references they made too.

I had to explain to Barron and James that the theme (karaoke-sung by Konata) at the end of the first episodes was, in fact, an actual anime theme....

For the most part, I get the jokes. 6 and a half minutes of talking about food, however, isn't usually all that funny no matter what culture you come from. Hence directors get changed.

I wasn't very impressed by the first episode, the humour was quite lacking in comparison to what I expected going by the hype it was given by other members. I understood most of the gags in the first episode but many just made me yawn. Hopefully the series picks up with the change of directors, I won't judge this series until I've seen up to episode 5.

This was the general consensus of just about everyone when the first episode came out months ago. The show really got ripped to shreds by fan reviewers and about the only thing that got through almost unscathed was the Lucky Channel segment at the end. After this the delivery style of the humour changed and became more fast-paced. And then the director was replaced.

I wasn't really won over until about episode 4.

I was won over from the start and couldn't see what people were complaining about. Then again, the amount of anime I like it immense. It's easier to ask me what I don't like than what I do.

Saying what you don't like is always much much easier than saying what you do. Though I tend to give shows a fighting chance until it becomes blindingly obvious that they're going to be crap. After all, I did watch 6 episodes of Speed Grapher to confirm what a pile of dehydrated goat excrement it really was.

My problem is that I keep watching even after I work out that a show is sub-par, although I did pull Tenjou Tenge off the playlist which we should always be glad for.
As for the jokes in Lucky Star, I get a few of them and bully Stormy into explaining the rest over MSN. Which reminds me, he did say that he was going to provide a thread that explained the jokes for the rest of us, I'm still waiting Stormy...

At least Oh Great!s artwork for Tenjo Tenge was good. But then, TT's plot was never going to be an example of high art.

One of these days I'll list the dozens of shows I've stopped watching and the reasons thereof. I think I've made my feelings well and truly known about Naruto, and what I actually did when I chose to stop watching it....

Please, stop thinking about it. You have the tendency to get excited (read: angry) and I'd like to remind you that it's my video card that you'll destroy if you send your PC through a window.

Not likely to ever happen again, since I have no intention of soiling my pc with that show in the forseeable future.

By the way.... Ending to Venus Versus Virus.... WTF? :?

No idea, that's one anime that I refused to touch after episode three.

It wasn't really so much an ending as the point where the episodes stopped. So much was left up in the air and rushed that it makes the wasteland of the early episodes almost criminal.

I find it easier to name shows that I enjoyed the most rather than shows I didn't like.

Currently absorbed in: Bokurano, Code Geass, Death Note, Jigoku Shoujo, Mushishi and Noein.

I found the effects of watching Lucky Star were similar to those of smoking a joint. You sit there for 25 minutes laughing, but afterwards you can't remember why. You also have some serious munchies. Weird.

Actually the 1st ep when they talked about chocolate pastry is first of 4 panel series. The first director is being faithful to the source material, in this case, very faithful.

I actually chuckled at the conversation since I remembered which I argued with my good friend about same thing long long time when I just a whippersnapper back then.

List of ending songs featured in Lucky Star so far:

Ep 01 endng song: (1976) Uchū Tetsujin Kyodain.
Ep 02 ending song: Akumaizer 3, "Victory! Akumaizer 3"
Ep 03 ending song: Sorega Ai Deshou, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu.
Ep 04 ending song: "Sailor Suit and Machine Gun"
Ep 05 ending song: Dragon Ball, Cha-la-Head-Cha-La
Ep 06 ending song: Valentine Kiss, Onyanko Club (80s)
Ep 07 ending song: Chijou no Hoshi , Miyuki Nakajima
Ep 08 ending song: Monkey Magic, Godiego (70s)
Ep 09 ending song: Kogarashi ni Dakarete, Koizumi Kyouko (80s)
Ep 10 ending song: Kahala Tomomi's, "I'm Proud"

HEEELLLLOOOO Type moon. Nice Nintendo DS Lucky Star Moe Drill Pic XD.

Reference Timotei => http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzm-hGVRV18

and my 2 cents, you have to be well balanced to understand all sorts of jokes in this anime... Like the Bianca and Flora reference in the anime.

The two in the top left hand corner of the pic Stormy posted appear in episode 11.

And I actually remember the Timotei commercials from the late 80's, which were exactly like Konata's impression.

Anime freaks are like a swarm of hornets on the internets.... Whatever happens to take their interest at the time, they're there in the millions. This is why 26% of Wikipedia articles are anime based. 8)

It's not actual content of wikipedia that anime makes up 26% of, but searches of wikipedia articles.

Kagami and Konata is 2 person tag team comedy which very popular concept in Japan. Hence their dominant share of the screen time. Ep 13 ending is pretty unique. Very unique...

I'm wondering who Naomi is. Any relation to Minamo (Nyamo)? 8)

And everyone knows Azumanga was a one-girl airhead rampage through the lives of other students.
