THE WINTER 09/10 THREAD

by Hans Stockmann » Fri Oct 30, 2009 12:53 pm

The obligatory chart's out, so we might as well start the usual complaining.

Things I'll watch from the basic description:
- Durarara!!
- Dance in the Vampire Bund
- Hidden God

Things I'll watch on principle:
- Nodame Cantabile Finale

Potential guilty pleasures:
- Qwaser of Stigmata
- Hanamaru Kindergarten (though it being a Gainax adaptation means that no doubt the kids will turn into talking bottlecaps or something when the budget runs out)

Reminders that Japan is still Japan:
- Chu-bra
Although I don’t know about the directions at 4:51.
It’s commonly known when you look north in Japan East is to your left. Please don’t try to correct that sentence. It lasts only for a second but I wouldn’t expect a mistake like that.

Looks like they're scaling back the number of productions to pre-2001 levels. Which is fine by me. We don't need 50 sub-par shows every season.

So for staff this has a director who directed Elfen Lied, a screenwriter who had some involvement with Code Geass, an animator who worked on Birdy the Mighty Decode and a composer who was responsible for the Bounen no Xamdou and Fullmetal Alchemist soundtracks.

I am really hoping this one delivers.

watched the preview of qawsar of stigmata...
ok same narrator as queens blade
guy can manipulate iron?
oh what! HE GETS HIS POWERS FROM BREAST MILK
well at least aria got her powers from mouth to mouth, tongue in cheek, girl on girl action
as soon as queens blade is finished next week its something to fill that "watchlist"

watchlist:
dance in the vampire bund
hanamaru kindergarden
durarara
Seikon no Qwaser
Gekijouban Yuu Gi Ou: Chou Yuugou! Toki o Koeta Kizuna (when it comes out who ever knows)
etc.

I watched that 2, the characters are just like the 1s in Kanokon. btw I watched "Reform Without Wasted Draws - The Legend of Koizumi" and god that show I just couldn't stop laughing when I'm watching it. This is another mahjong show but it's way better than Saki. I can keep watching this over and over again even tho its only a pre-release. :D

i watched sora-no-woto first episode
it was interesting i can't get rid of the k-on! look alike, but its not what interest's me the plot is mysterious and tragic world of war the background and attention to detail small device's (watches and necklace)
the sound and background music are superb.
its got some kind of culture feeling like spice and wolf does to me with village festival folk tale's, then theres that mysterious tank like thing has me interested in what the hell it is?
i give this ultimate recommendation for ajas playlist :respect:

We're watching the new shows of this season to see if they're viable replacement shows. So far, Sora no Woto is the only one to get a real thumbs up. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Omamori Himari and Dance in the Vampire Bund are next, in which I'm expecting fake minderjährigen mädchen vampire show to be the only vaguely passable one. Then comes Ookami Kakushi, Durarara and Hidamari Sketch x ☆☆☆. We haven't played any of the Hidamari series, since they're so determinedly slice-of-life on the Aria level that they'd probably put everyone asleep. The other two shows, though, are hopefuls.

And, of course, Nodame Cantabile: Finale starts later this month.
Also: Cobra the Animation. For manly action. Maybe.

baka to test to shokanju was pretty fun to watch the whole classroom level's declaring ESB (exam summon battle) to fight for next class level they summon little chibi RPG-ish version's of themselve's and they fight and if they want to level up or heal or raise there attack they take restoration exams to fight its bizarre but its kinda good in a way i see this as possible ajas material my thumb approves this! :respect:

hmmm durarara :D
not bad nice setting i think its obvious as day this anime is related to baccano same OP style same character setup it starts of ok i guess how the main character is introduced but the immense flux of characters being introduced is a bit much for me and such at least the headless biker was nice bit and the whole online chat factor comes into play with the area i am not sure if i will enjoy watching the series as much had trouble with baccano might be the reason but if u liked baccano its a modern warefare fix for you...

Sora no Woto - This has been nice so far. 2 eps in, it's got me back in an anime mood. It's light, it's funny, it's heartwarming, it's soothing on the eyes, mind, heart and soul. Kanata is just a constant source of laughs and smiles. Love the music, good blend of character personalities, seems like a decent story will emerge. K-ON comparisons can stop, hopefully. If anything, the one series it feels like is ARIA.

Definitely sticking with this.

Right, guess I'll give my thoughts. Categorised into tiers for your convenience.

Vending Machine Tier:
- Durarara!!

Charming Tier:
- Sora no Woto
- Hanamaru Kindergarten

Better writing than FMA and Gundam 00 Tier:
- Hanamaru Kindergarten

Lulzy premise ruined by bland execution Tier:
- Seikon no Qwaser

Pretentious Tier:
- Dance in the Vampire Bund

I'm a 07th Expansion Fanboy Tier:
- Ookamikakushi

Dancougar Tier:
- Chu-bra!

Qwaser I'm dropping. The rest stay.
Although I don’t know about the directions at 4:51.

Seen episode 2, yet, where they set it up to be a high school romantic comedy with vampires, a monster of the week and amnesia?

The sooner the Shaft studios burn down, with all staff perishing inside, the better.

that episode was complete bullshit! only 1 scene from the first volume appeared and it was stupid SHAFT you FUK HEADS! even the OP was complete bull and just the amnesia wut tha fuk! these pricks can't do anything right! the one manga i enjoy and they butcher it to piece's! this has driven me to the point of hating anything else made by SHAFT zetzuboa sensei i can deal with but anything else is just unwatchable...

Okay, serious question - If I really despised Baccano, is Durarara worth pursuing?

Durarara isn't that much like Baccano. At least, not yet it isn't.

The only January title I've watched so far is Sora no Woto. I'm trying to figure out what else may be worth watching. I'm too scarred and drained for time to do the 'try everything' approach which colossaly backfired back in October 2009. And the descriptions of series aren't exactly thrilling me. New Nodame series, I'll watch. But I'd like to think there is more to this season and I noticed Durarara is getting a pretty high rating on AniDB so far, so I was curious.

About all Durarara really shares in common with Baccano is the enormous cast of characters and a supernatural element. It doesn't have (so far as I've seen) the multiple timeline thing going on, but it does have characters who tend to go on violent little rampages. The only people who look like they've been dispensed with were scumbags who deserved it.

Far too early in the series to really make a judgement. Most of it is just introductions.

Surely episode 2 of Bund isn't that bad?
Although I don’t know about the directions at 4:51.
It’s commonly known when you look north in Japan East is to your left. Please don’t try to correct that sentence. It lasts only for a second but I wouldn’t expect a mistake like that.

No, it is kinda entertaining in that "trainwreck in 3....2....1...." kinda way. You can see this series is in the process of being badly derailed by not only Shaft and Shinbo, but by the original mangaka who is very heavily on-board with all of the changes. Which goes to prove that, sometimes, the original mangaka are just as much a pack of chimps with down syndrome as the animators.

I was going to do a EDIT: Oh god it is gag after watching it, but it appears I've been beaten to the punch. Is it wrong that after watching it, I was reminded of Juushin Liger?

Regardless, now I feel like reading Devilman again.

all i am gonna say is if u want to really get into the vampire bund you gotta read the manga. its a good read for what its worth if they approve the anime changes there just as mad as SHAFTS animation staff...
only shows that really got me going are...

1.baka to test to shoukanjuu just utter comical plot and character creation and nice happy up and go! feel for the OP and the ED
2. Hanamaru Youchien is like "oh you trying to hit on my 5 year old daughter well i guess its all right what with you being a old classmate of mine" 0_o its something that makes me wonder "wow somehow i enjoy this?"
then its like "oh GAINAX seems about right"
3.seikon no qwasar what! its ok sure its badly censored... but theres been a uncensored airing of episode 1 i am willing to keep going i gotta cause my queens blade fix needs some healing :D

Have you ever actually dealt with little kids? They do those sorts of things all the time. The mother's just running with it because, as the rest of her dialogue throughout the episode showed, she's a Grade A troll.

Oh its a world where pedophilia has been discovered, as the reaction of the other parents does show....

Kids say this kinda stuff all the time. I know I was a little sh!t who did when I was that age. Wonderful thing, making adults feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. I also spent plenty of time getting caned by headmasters and spending time in detention, so it all evens out in the end.

Hanamaru Kindergarden is such a suprisingly win show. Ep2 ending credits are just epic. This is show is such twisted fun. Although I always listen to a bit of metal directly after watching an episode to bring myself back to reality.

Well, it doesn't have any of the usual Gainax staff.

Exactly. When Gainax don't revert to rehash, they can actually succeed. That has been my point all along.

wow 50 minute episode of katanagatari and it was... amazing if u can handle the 950 lines they speak in one episode its up there with sora no woto beautiful aura, intriguing story edo period with a slight twist of fictional parts the amount they try and ram down your throats in 50 minute episode is unbelieavable but it is gotta be worth noticing unique style and action is rare at times...
its got the seal of approval :respect:

Well, not quite this season, not quite the next, but I've just sat through all 2 hours and 41 minutes of "The Mindf**k of Ritsuko Kettenkrad" movie, and I will say I rather enjoyed it, even better than season 1... now if only there was a bluray of it somewhere....
