and that no one from the avcon staff groupings did anything about the can tower behind my table at quiz night until someone knocked it over. they kept saying its not their fault that they didnt put a stop to it before someone threw something at it.... and locked my thread when I asked for the person that threw objects at it and knocking it over onto several people to come forward and apologize to those that he/she hit.

No, the 17th (which this thread is about) is the week before AVCon.

We know who knocked over at least one of the tables can towers, but we are protecting that person.

I don't think your table was close enough to mine for it to be the can tower I'm thinking of.

I don't remember much about the can tower. I do remember that Tim's pizza looked like a mutant pile of nuclear sludge....

Greg is also a volunteer at AVCon.... I think. 8)

it was the biggest can tower, people kept throwing stuff at it
and someone who threw something managed to knock it over, and a can or two rained down onto my head hardish, but lucky for the dummkopf, it was empties... but hurts alot.

we had an extra pizza i believe.

All I will say is: they better have the pizza situation sorted out this year, if they're having pizzas at all during the quiz night. They thought they had it sorted out last year, but the shop involved let them down big-time.

I say we get our own pizzas delivered from Marcellinas.

Whilst Marcellinas are much more expensive, their pizzas are far better than Aussie, by ingredients alone. But I doubt we'd be allowed to.

With all this negativity about AVCon, it'll probably turn out to be fantastic. Maybe we should take bets on whether it better/worse than 2006.

And the manager, who had made all the promises about being able to fill the order, had gone home (or whatever it was he was doing at the time) and they discovered the shop had about one oven to cover the order. So those who went to pick the order up ended up helping to make the pizzas themselves. I suppose, under those circumstances, we can forgive the things for not being perfect when they arrived on our tables. But you'd still imagine that it would be better to be safe than sorry and try and cover the order with a number of different APH's throughout the city. I've been to four different ones....

Go with what the ACS does... call Pizza Hut. If they need the services of other Pizza Huts they organise it themselves.

You've probably missed the good AVCons.... 2003-05 were the best. 2006 was certainly not as good as they were. But I stand to be corrected if this one is awesome. I also sit down to be corrected. 8)

'04 and '05 were better than last year, even though I thought last year was better. But once you correct for the new relationship high I was on at the time, the other ones were better.

yeah... poor unisaga group... dave was like, snuggling me up in dark corners... enough said on that matter... heh.. but yeah i cant say if last year was good or not because of the constant rain, the cold and the long hikes to avcon, the can tower thing... or the fact it was my first time there. i didnt win the art competition either!

AVCon has always suffered from being in the middle of Winter. That's why cosplayers should always choose costumes that reflect the time of the year. Choosing Rikku is probably not the smartest thing to do, as had been demonstrated in 2005....

I think the sun has come out only once in the five AVCons I've been to. Most of the time it is just plain cold and/or raining.

On top of this is the Plague of AVCon. Lots of people, many from different parts of the country, congregating together, bringing with them whatever lurgy that has been lurking around their circle of hell.... I've ended up feeling pretty horrible after three of the last four cons....

I'm one of those evil bastards that brings sickness and disease to AVCOn every year, I can feel it starting now.
Sam, the owner of Parafield Marcellinas told me that for an order of 200 pizzas, he could get them all delivered into the city by a time specified by the customer, charge only $10 a pizza and would throw in a free garlic bread with each pizza. The only problem he could see was Marcellinas in the city wouldn't be amused by him stealing business from them, but they could probably do the same deal if you approached them.

Surely a vote for "the Pocky costs too much" is the same as a "yes"...

(speaking of Pocky, since I'll be in town next thursday to pick up my DS Lite, I think I'll go to the Asian grocery stores in Central Market for a Pocky run)

Hmmm, we only heard one side of the story and even then it didnt even convince me that the pizza situation wasnt GAP's fault, well actually it wasnt if they didnt prepaid for the pizzas. They did say 'that they will have the extra staff' but did they prepaid at least for 20 pizzas as a small estimate? Did they actually discuss it with the manager in question or the second in charge?

Even the prepaid issue should of been done then it would of been Great Australian Pizzas fault but from what I'm hearing, it looks like Avcons fault. It's like Ebay/business you dont ask them to make/send stuff without paying for it and now people have to pre-order pizzas before the avcon quiznight? What next? Do people have to ask to go to the toilet in the middle of quiznight?

2003 was easily the best AvCon. The only year with a decent anime lineup, cosplay was good, merchandise was good, rooms were good and it lead me to AJAS and my inevitable meeting with the one series I will consider to be the greatest for eternity.

So here's a good question

Is AVCON a convention or a ghost meeting? I'm betting to see if Casper comes and shakes everybody's hand and the headless horseman to make an appearance.

Well from what AVCon are doing right now changing rules under our feet about every second, I wonder if it will be a convention.

Your giving me the information Candice, the preordering of pizzas, the prebooking of tables, the nice 2 day period of prebooking of tickets, the list just goes on and on not to mention the pokemon tournament which you're miffed about as well. I dont have to lurk all I have to do is listen.

On topic, petition to fund cheeseless pizzas for Scott on Saturday.

I would also appreciate any flammable liquid that would set Dutchy's beard on fire, potentially the rest of him as well.

Please don't do this... I can't get a pizza because they have pre-ordered only specific choices (nothing special). However, Barron could get me a specially ordered pizza if I want one as he's a driver. All settled... and bonus points for Barron.

Plus we get to sit and eat our better pizzas while everyone else sits around waiting for their burned, cold and nasty APH pizzas.

There is no way the AVcon pizzas will be on time since they arrive later every year.

Well, I did happen to mention, on the AVCon Forum, my opinion on Super Tree Boy vs The Walking Volcano being the premiere film supplied by Madman Entertainment. Something along the lines of "you know just how much they respect AVCon by giving us this film as the opening night centrepiece".... AJAS played it last year, and the reaction was pretty lukewarm, to say the least.

But then, it was a GONZO film, so my opinions would be rarely balanced. What was the general reaction to the film afterwards. AJAS had the slow hand clap going....

The general reaction to the film halfway through was Pictochat and walking out.

This isn't really anything to do with the AVCON, but I really hate how all the stuff to buy from the vendors is just as expensive as buying in JBHiFi when they are on special. I can never find anything to buy, nothing jumps out at me and screams, cheap! That is my little rant. :D

There is very little, if anything, that is cheaper in the vendors hall than that which you can buy outside, in the retailers. Pulp Fiction does some X Number mangas for such and such a price deals, but really, that's about all. It goes somewhat against the ethos of conventions, themselves, to not have specials available....

Standard Rasberry reply:

Waicon had a better traders room! and the anime shop there - Empire actually do good con deals and they chuck some random freebies in with purchases.... i mean they supplied 100s of prizes to waicon, i would kill to have them attend avcon!

Might actually force Madman to raise their game. Even with other vendors selling dvds and mangas, it didn't stop most of the choice titles being no more worth buying at AVCon than anywhere else.

Quite apart from most said choice titles having passed my eyes at some stage in the recent past, thus not being as attractive to own on dvd as they might have been. I was more interested in the Ghibli collection, though.... They're worth getting on dvd. Must rifle through the stand, tomorrow, when I have more time....

Not in particular costings, but it can't be cheap for Madman to ship all that stuff from Melbourne and back.

You'd think they'd want to offer below retail prices to avoid having to take some of it back.

There were certainly holes appearing in Pulp Fiction's little collection of mangas near the end of the con. So there was no real reason for Madman to be working to rule. Though Madman's $10 box (which had become a $5 box on Sunday) was starting to empty, too....

*shrug* You'd have to ask one of the vendors or one of the AVCon staff how much it costs. I don't think anyone here is exactly privy to that kind of info.

the Madmanstall is a weird one, they always have the $10 mangas, but their range of mangas is still tiny. The $10 DVD box was there, but the only non- V1 of something was a vampire hunter D, but that was cos the case got the knife treatment when being opened! The $10 V1s was and always be a smart marketing move, i mean it entices people to buy the series 1 at a time, at what..... $30 each, when the DVDs them selves will be released in a few months in a set of 6 for $120... on the flip side getting V1 is cool because it allows you to trial a series before you buy it.

to get a price of a traders table you would have to PM someone in charge in the AVcon forums, but the prices of 2008 have not been made yet as we have only just finished 2007. one thing to remember is that there is a differance between traders tables and artists tables, so if you are an artist, it would probably be better for you to get an artists table.

also get in early beacause the traders hall was booked out this year...

This year - AVCon.

Their answer to a lot of criticism seems to be "it's run by volunteers, so you can't expect it to be that great". But Terra Nova is run by volunteers and they manage to start events on time and get rid of trouble makers quickly.

Perhaps 2008 will not have the 10 volunteers and then we see how IRaidWith3DifferentWOWGuildsButIDissAnyoneElseWhoPlays and NederPie handle it. :P

This year - AVCon.

Their answer to a lot of criticism seems to be "it's run by volunteers WHO DRINK LIKE FISHES IN THE SEA, so you can't expect it to be that great ". But Terra Nova is run by volunteers and they manage to start events on time and get rid of trouble makers quickly.

I don't know about that... my uncle was in town a couple of weeks ago, and every evening we'd sit down with a few bottles of red. I matched him drink-for-drink, and had morning after gut (where you feel like you've got diarrhea but you really don't, it's due to alcohol damaging your gut lining) all the time he was here and 3 days after he went back to Brisbane.

not bad, though it's reasonably simple to keep yourself from going too far on wine. it's notably harder on spirits, especially when they're over %50 alcohol.
light beer is silly. most beer doesn't taste good enough to drink without the alcoholic effects and most of the light beer i've tasted tastes like watered down beer.
and the people i was talking about only ever have a couple of drinks, as far as i know and i don't think they know about long-island iced tea

The only "beers" I really like are dark ales and stouts. I find them somewhat easier on the palate whilst not exactly scrimping on the alcohol content (especially if they're from the UK or Ireland). Though I have found some very nice European dark ales as well.

The highest alcohol content beers I've had were still the Belgian boutique ones, though. The content levels in those are close to that of some spirits.

That's why I'm not doing it again, so don't worry. Also, last week when I had no alcohol or coffee for a week I felt the best (mentally speaking, still had the pre-AVCon plague) I have for quite a while.

Milk, if you're not lactose intolerant: drink some before you have any alcohol. If helps to protect the stomach lining somewhat. Or so the old wives tale goes.

The best hangover prevention I know of is to take hospital-grade potassium and vitamin B supplements before drinking, also to alternate between booze and water. (Learned this from my aunt who's a retired nurse).

Doctors recommend Voltaren before and after your sessions and Berocca afterwards. Voltaren will prevent the swelling caused by NSAIDs and Berocca will replace the large amount of Vitamin b12 (riboflavin) that alcohol destroys.

Thats strange, because I've heard that beer turns milk sour in your gut, making you quite ill. As for other types of alcamahol, however, I don't know.

From personal experience I can say that drinking milk does help and so does eating greasy food. They slow down the rate at which the alcohol is absorbed through your stomach lining. Also, cured meats are great to consume while drinking.

The other thing to consider is rehydration with non-alcoholic fluids in between drinks, as osmosis will force alcohol out of your blood stream and replace it with water from other parts of your body. So if you keep fluids in your body, more water will already be in your system and a lower percentage of water will leave your cells to the bllodstream once osmosis fixes up the alcohol imbalance. As for Vitamin B12, it is one of the coenzymes in the Krebs Cycle from memory, which is one of the three stages of glucose metabolism in the body.

As for the milk and greasy food, my guess would be that milk fat and fats from greasy food would head towards the bilipid cell layers and linger there. The bilipid structure is set up so charged ends can attract each other at the surfaces while the neutral sides are directed inwards. Digestable fat molecules are generally in monoglyceride to triglyceride forms and are damn huge compared to the other stuff you're digesting. They will block up traffic down there so a midget molecule like alcohol is going to have two problems - getting through the traffic and generating enough forces of attraction when trying to get through cell walls.

Soap is made of a damn huge triglyceride molecule called sodium stearate, a 35 carbon molecule, fyi.

I've drunk milk, followed by beer, and never had a problem with it. Mind you, I don't drink that much in the way of beer. Spirits and ciders, yes....

The stomach is primarily for the digestion of fats and proteins as well as breaking highly complex sugars down into less complex ones. Considering milk is mainly these components, hence why it is easily digested in the stomach. Anything other than fat and protein is digested in the duodenum.

The bacterial cultures you have living in your digestive system probably starts turning milk into yakult the moment you drink it. When you think about all the wondrous combinations of food that you choose to put together inside your gut without there being much in the way of effects, you soon learn to stop worrying about whether things like ice cream and vegemite are a good combination.... 8)
