Need some broadband plans advice ASAP

by Last Exile » Thu Jun 28, 2007 11:59 pm

Miraculously, it is going to happen. The inevitable move into more complex subjects has convinced my mother that the time has come to ove up to broadband.

Now comes the part where White reaches for his Glock - I am having a VERY HARD time convincing my mother that Big Pond isn't the best option. -_- I've gotten hold of the options for Internode and Adam Internet, but so far, I'm not seeing that much difference.

These are the points from the plans she has seen so far that are swaying here towards Big Pond.

1. Installation is $129 (about the same as the rest) but the modem is free (and it ain't in the others).
2. For the 1st year, any plan is half price.

Help...save me from the trap of Big Pond. I've got limited time to convince her otherwise.

So questions I pose to you guys:

1. Do you guys use any of the suppliers I mentioned or know of other other options?

Adam Internet

Internode

Big Pond (Posting that as reference)

2. Any recommendations for a plan? Is 1.5 fast enough or would going for an 8MB plan be worth it? Adam Internet's 8000/384 40GB plan for $90 seemed decent in comparison to similar limits the other 2 offer.

So yeah, please help. White, you can be as vicious as you want. I don't know how the hell she got to thinking Big Pond was a good idea.

Look, I said Glocks were alright. Don't make White break out the AK-47. You clearly never heard what he said about Optus.

neva had a problem with optus. best in have been with. and you mentioned nothing about avoiding them, so it was an obvious decision to mention them.

Fair enough.

Mackellar is currently swaying me to Internode's Home Extreme Value of ADSL 2+ 20GB for $59.95 a month. Now that looks nice. Apparently that's the one he's on.

The three I would choose from are:

TPG, Adam and Internode.

I'm currently with TPG on a cheaper plan that doesn't exist anymore but I'm on it until I choose to change

Personally I would hold off until TPG releases it's new plan. 150GB of transfers an month for only $69.99, roughly the same price as an AK-47 a month.
Please don't accuse me of using Glocks, i regard them as cheap pieces of scheiße and would much rather use a Browning Hi-Power, CZ-75 or Desert Eagle .50AE.

+1 for Internode, Never had any problems, and heaps of free files, way more and easier to get than with GA...

Make sure that she reads the bit of the contract that says they charge for uploads. Show her how none of the other companies charge for uploads.

Then explain that effectivly halves the amount of data you get.
For an example use IP phones, talk up how it will save her cash when calling STD and overseas friends and relatives. Then point out how bad the telstra deal is compared to even the worst ISPs.

Next make sure to point out that the "free" modem is useless. For example it doesn't work with Vista properly or at all.

Now that's the kind of talk I wanted to hear. ;) Onya Brian, cheers mate. Only bit I didn't understand was about the modem. So does that mean a lot of sites won't comply with the modem they supply? I don't know what Vista or stuff like that is.

BWAH HA ha ha!!!! Thou knowith nought!

Vista = Windows Vista

Telstra modems are scheiße anyway. Usually they give you a USB modem that has to be plugged into a PC and shared.

Eithernet modems are stand alone, they don't relie on any one pc.
If you get one with wireless built in you can then browse the net from anywhere on you property eg outside. Just make sure to setup security.

I can help you with that if you get the wireless option. Useless if you don't have a notebook in the house.

i'm with ADAM and it's pretty good
if you can, get an ADSL2+ plan as they're cheaper than ADSL because telstra is a hure.
$45 a month for 10GB down, 10GB up, 10GB peering. you also get a 10% discount for being with CPS credit union
anyway, good modems are reasonably cheap nowadays
for the price comparison thing, you should probably point out the cost over the 2 year contract for bigpond and compare it to 2 years on whoever you want to switch to. aslo point out that changing parts of your contract can cost alot and if you're on a short-term contract, you don't have that issue

actually, i was planning on it fading into the background, like it does on some of the other forums i use. i didn't realise that the background wasn't white, so it wouldn't work

i was actually referring to the fact that most of the people wouldn't care whether you have a boyfriend or not, even if they're being filthy (most of the won't even care about your gender)
