The perils of the paid reviewers

by Last Exile » Wed May 30, 2007 10:56 am

While browsing before my final Computer Science lecture, found something that I found quite...well....you decide which euphenism is appropriate....

(Okay, it is from AnimeNewsNetwork, whose judgement can vary from on the spot to brain-dead, but this one was just downright....)

'Shakugan no Shana is a rip-off of Bleach except the main girl is cuter.'

Um....thoughts?

Paid reviewers are almost invariably the most stupid people alive. Except for television executives.

So true. But this comment was from way out of left field. Using Bleach as a comparison...that series is the nth of Shonen Jump's formulaic shounen machine. It makes one heck of a weak comparison point because calling Bleach original is simply a joke.

I hope he chokes when he sees where Bleach goes from the Soul Society arc onwards.

Considering that Bleach has a lot more in common with Dragon Ball than it does with Shakugan no Shana, I wonder if the reviewer even bothered to watch them or if they just read a summary.

This reminds me of the reviews in the gaming magazine that Jason brought to UniSAGA a few weeks ago.... The one where the reviewer was talking down Fate/Stay Night (but not the bits he should have been talking down, quite the opposite, in fact.... he was talking up the show's weaknesses and talking down its strengths) whilst on the same page gave a glowing review of Bleach. And one could just tell, from what he was saying, that he'd not seen anything more than the first episode of each.

But to compare SnS to Bleach is just so far down the road to congenital idiocy that it calls into question the reviewer's qualifications for stringing letters together to form words and, ultimately, the scary domain of sentences and paragraphs. Or, to paraphrase Lucky Star "do you skip the thinking stage before you speak?"

Polyacrylide gel or ethidium bromide are far more effective.

Well the interesting thing is on that same site, the person who watched the full series of the animated version of SnS gave volumes an average of B+ or A- and there certainly weren't any comparisons to Bleach there. Then comes this dummkopf who reviews Volume 1 of the manga and opens with that statement.

I just had to post that comment he made, it's so damn stupid you can't help but laugh.
