Japanese government officials reprimanded for Gundam posts

Japanese Officials Reprimanded for Gundam Wikipedia Updates

Six officials working for Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) were the subject of national media attention on Thursday when they were caught updating Wikipedia articles about the anime series Gundam on company time. One employee was specifically accused of over 200 updates to the popular user-supported online encyclopedia. The story was covered by the Yomiuri Shimbun paper, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) Television, and other news agencies amid growing concerns about public officials who are caught using taxpayer-supported equipment and work time for personal use. The public officials involved received a verbal reprimand for the offense.

Okay, govenrment officials exploiting their position or ther money is normal. But over Gundam?! That's just freaking sad!
Disgusting...

This isn't the first time this has happened. Officials from the Japanese Ministry of Health were caught updating Wiki entries on a dating sim based anime (whose name escapes me now) not all that many months ago....

Are you meaning the officials being reprimanded over Gundammery is sad, or that using taxpayer funded time for Gundammery is? Not having a go at you, just my pre-coffee mind is having trouble grasping the context.

I think researching Gundams is probably one of the least morally questionable things a Government Official can do with his time and/or money. :)

Resident tank enthusiast. See me for racist and opinionated storytelling and vaguely accurate historical tank warfare-themed rants.

Gundam is one of the greatest mecha franchise in Japan hence it is not surprising that this happens. All Japanese anime fans that I met only asked me 2 questions when they find out that I watch anime.

1. Do you watch EVA?

and

2. Do you watch Gundam?

And my response to those questions would be:

1. Yes, and it was crap.

and

2. Yes, but it became crap after the first series, so not anymore.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. Look at Australian Idol. :P

Back in the ancient times, when I was a kid, everyone my current age and older would tell me that television was a load of rubbish. Only it wasn't true. Then. Even the average shows were watchable.

Today it is true. Wall to wall mindless shite, almost unwatchable except for those congenital idiots who seem to make up the bulk of the audience, these days.

Sorry, having an Old Man rant, again. 8)

Feel free, I would. To everybody else, just remember, we will all be like this one day, so now is as good a time to get some practice...
