AJAS History?

by Bazza » Thu Sep 28, 2006 3:21 pm

Who are/were the original founding members of AJAS? Besides Mappy of course.

Anything interesting ever happen to AJAS as an organization before I came along?

Kenneth Burgoyne, Mark Page (aka Mappy) and Nick whatsisname were in charge for a long while. Think David Gemell might have been involved as well.

Paid members? Dunno. But I've seen from as little as 12 to possibly as many as 30-35 people at screenings. :D

There are 16 members signed up on the UniSA side, which doesn't charge for membership. I have no idea how many members of the Adelaide Uni side there are, all I know is that AJAS never sees any of their funding and all of AJAS's screenings are held at UniSA City East.
The number of people attending screeningsd is around the 30-35 mark as mentioned before but was filling lecture theatres in 2002. Go Advertise Us To Your Friends!

AJAS began on the 15th of June, 1993 at Adelaide Uni. The founders were Brad Rheinheimer (now living in Melbourne) and Steve Wedd (now living in Sydney). The meetings ran for three hours and were held once a fortnight, pretty much up until the start of 1995, after Steve had given up the job of running anything and Brad flounced off, tired of running something that wasn't giving him any fun anymore. Guess who took over...?

Anyways, about mid-1996 both myself and the then president, Johnny Wong (now living in Sydney.... am I detecting a pattern here?) discovered that most of the club's uni members were actually from UniSA (as were we at the time) as opposed to AU, despite our best efforts at advertising the club there. So the club was moved holus-bolus to UniSA at City East and has pretty much been there ever since. Johnny left at the start of 1997 and, after an altercation with bureaucracy there, I handed in my control of AJAS.... for the first time.... over to anyone who would take over. Temporarily that was Jim, whose presence basically scared officialdom at the university into compliance, and then, eventually (in 1998) to Adrian Chan and Justin Kelly. A situation that variously continued into 2001, when Adrian left for Canberra and Justin vanished into the ether.... Which was about the time Nick Klaebe took over.

Most of you know what followed from then on.... We tried an AJAS committee in 2003, and it didn't work so it became the terrible trio of Nick, Kenny (Burgoyne) and myself. Then Kenny took for a while until he tired of it and handed everything over to the current crew.

maybe something slightly more ecchi would help to bring people in? instead of everyone cying like 12yo when anything remotely risque is shown.we need to appeal to a wide range of demogaraphics, not just conservative uni students.

This was practically all that was played before you came. I was nearly lynched but managed to divert the blame to Greg.

If Barron was as skilled as you are with that, White, then we would truly have a reason to be afraid.

Attendance is down due to a combination of the titles available to play being lower quality overall than they were 3-5 years ago and the fact that one can get hold of the titles themselves more readily these days thanks to the wonderufl world of technology.

However, I do remember the attendance going up a bit again when Paranoia Agent, Elfen Lied and Genshiken were all on the playlist at the same time. Now those were fun times.

What is playing at the moment is pretty much the strongest overall playlist we've had since 2002. And believe me, we've tried almost every type of show since that time.

There was no great golden age of anime. Except for 1998, but that just goes without saying. 8)

I agree with Mappy. The anime on offer at the moment is great and you can expect some even greater shows to come to the playlist soon (As soon as enough episodes are released that is). It's just that a lot of the anime we are currently screening is so new that a lot of possible members are deterred due to unfamiliarity.

Too much ecchi only brings in the wrong crowd, a little bit is okay but there has to be a limit. The same goes for any kind of anime. If I'm not mistaken AJAS's goal is to introduce people to a wide range of anime.

Furthermore, AJAS needs to appeal to Uni students, especially ones from UniSA to continue to run. AJAS needs at least 10 UniSA students as signed members to continue their affiliation and be able to use the University's facility.

The sad thing is sometimes the gems get voted off and some of the really schizenhausen ones get voted in off 1 episode and then people regret it. Remember the reaction after the first episodes of Bottle Fairy, Gokusen, Gunslinger Girls? Most people thought they were the bomb to start with then wondered what monster they had unleashed on AJAS.

As I did discuss with Mappy last week, 2006 is a step in the right direction. However, there's still a way to go.

Bottle Fairy yes. Gokusen maybe. But Ginslinger Girl had its fans. They're all very strange people, but all the same. 8)

Oh, and you forgot 2x2=Shinobuden. Funny first episode, pity the rest were scheiße.

What is needed is for 2007 and 2008 to be at least as good, if not better, than 2006 for one to say that there has been a revival in the fortunes of anime. 2003-05 had their good shows, but the majority was just plain, honest scheiße, much the same as a decade beforehand when all the good stuff were oavs, and thus there was very little of it around. 1995-96 saw a revival, mostly in tv anime, so if the pattern holds, 2008 should be legendary. 8)

1. Agreed
2. Agreed
3. Gunslinger Girl's main problem was it ended so abruptly when the manga had plenty of story it could have been based on. Madhouse really messed that up. That and Chobits really earned them being on my Evil Trinity.
4. We can only hope. But with Paprika incoming, the next couple of years are beginning to look good.

As far as would predict , AJAS may reach a stage of the skeleton crew hardcore . Hopefully that wont be...

To the point , the future of AJAS will be kinda uphill considering the issues that keep adding .

Campus Cesspool shafting our bookings , Security , F&B , Campus Cesspool again accusing us of other ppl's bad behaviour , the internet , Madman , bad anime ...

Problems with officialdom can usually be sorted out one way or another as has been the case in the past.

Madman has become precisely the kind of company we expected it to become after its takeover. We'll sort out that problem as well when the need arises.

Put simply there really is no point fretting over things that might happen.
