Anthology is 1st Japanese-animated work in the running for awards since 2005

Batman: Gotham Knight, a compilation of shorts about DC Comics' costumed detective, has become the first Japanese-animated work since 2005 to be nominated for the Annie Awards. Warner Brothers commissioned several of anime's most well-known studios to animate scripts written by American writers. The Annie Awards recognize outstanding achievement in animation that was screened or commercially released in the United States.

The anthology will be competing for the title of Best Animated Home Entertainment Production, while Kevin Manthei, who composed the score, is in the running for an individual Music in an Animated Feature Production award. The last Japanese-animated work to compete for an Annie was Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle, which was one of 2005's Best Animated Feature nominees. The most recent time a Japanese-animated work actually won was three years earlier, when Spirited Away took the same category.

The Hollywood chapter of the International Animated Film Society will hold the 36th Annie Awards ceremony on January 30 at Royce Hall in Los Angeles.
