Playlist - 6th May 2008 - OVA Night

by Dhumahn » Tue Apr 29, 2008 11:20 pm

The movie is fixed, everything else isn't:

Sword of the Stranger movie
Either Mahou Yuugi 2D 1 or Dai Mahou Touge 1
and another hour worth of random stuff (not sure what it will be yet, everyone will have to find out on Tuesday)

Mnemosyne will apparently no longer be played, due to the content being too explicit for screening.

Also, here's a thought for next month. Apparently June 2008 marks 15 years of AJAS. Does anybody want to do something special for this event, or should we just let it pass. You decide.

...enjoy.

AWWWWW CMON AJAS played Gantz. I'm sure that AJAS can take another risk with Mnemosyne.

No, Mnemosyne really isn't the kind of show you watch in the company of other men.

The actual date that AJAS turns 15 (I hope I got this right) is the 13th, which falls on the friday after the long weekend. If we decide to do anything in-meeting, it will most likely be the tuesday beforehand.

Sword of the Stranger movie
Mahou Yuugi 2D 1
Dai Mahou Touge 1

This will probably happen.
I'm thinking over the last item. Give me time.

Dai Mahou Touge
Mahou Yuugi
Stranger -Mukou Hadan-

As I said, I'm pondering over the final playlist item. I'm just trying to surround a rather grim samurai/swordfight film with light, fluffy and/or braindead. But hopefully not too much. 8)

A pity, really. Both Kite Liberator and Sword of the Stranger were quite good, the former in that wonderful trainwreck sort of way. And I'd not seen them before, so it was hard to find something to convince Atory and Mendes to stay after Magical Play....

I've seen enough trainwrecks to last to the 31st century.

Meh, Atory and I are very disillusioned with the current state of anime. You only have to remember what I told you about the current regular playlist to figure that out, Mappy.

And Aria doesn't even rate on AnimeNFO while Last Exile is #13 on the all time list. 8)

I think it's time to take this to the PMs, Mappy.

I for one loved all the stuff that was shown last Tue - in fact, I'm grabbing the first ep of Magical Play right now. I reckon people are too hard on anime - I didn't mind the cliches. I mean what movie or TV show isn't filled with cliches?

Also, what critics say vs. what fans say often seems to be quite different; for example Kanokon got approx. 2/5 from ANN, but the user reviews are all around 7/10. Of course, it can probably go the other way too (can't think of any examples though).

Last Exile wrote:And Aria doesn't even rate on AnimeNFO while Last Exile is #13 on the all time list. 8)

This would be the Aria that rates 8.4-8.5 out of 10 for its first two seasons compared to Last Exile's 8.8. Which still puts both shows roughly in the same league there, as well. 8)

Now I'm just splitting hairs. I can watch Aria anyday. Easiest show in history to watch. Last Exile requires a bit of Aria to clean the brain out afterwards. Of course, I'm planning to rewatch Last Exile again, soon, so I'll see if the 3-4 years since I last watched it have changed my opinion of it....

Yes, but then Kanokon isn't exactly the best argument for the incorrect assessment of critics. 8)

I can be harsh on shows that I actually like. Cowboy Bebop tries too hard to be cool/everything to everyone, Azumanga Daioh is pretty empty once you've watched it all, Haibane Renmei really is slow and only just manages to stretch a fairly lean animation budget, Mushishi is 26 episodes of "why are we putting up with these friggin' mushi, then?", Zettai Shonen is two series that couldn't survive without each other, and is twice as long as it needs to be, as the filler is made up of people utterly failing to talk to each other despite stated desires to do otherwise, Aria is a great cure for insomnia, Simoun has lots of blah blah blah blah blah whilst failing to explain its world very well and leaving you to work it out as you watch it, Fruits Basket is the new Ranma etc etc etc etc.... That doesn't mean I don't continue to like these shows. It just means it is easier for me (and, by reason of extension, everyone else) to state what they don't like as opposed to what they do.

Hell, I watched all 20 episodes of Trouble Chocolate. I defy anyone else to do that. 8)

We don't seem to be tearing each other to shreds over each others' particular opinions about various shows. I don't see why he would explode over it.

I could have sworn that the playlist forum was the best place to discuss items that we have played. Perhaps LE doesn't want to talk about them here because he doesn't want more people disagreeing with his opinions. Like how a certain series starts off great for the first half, meanders it's way through the second half and finishes with a giant, golden nutcracker.

I would have stayed longer on Tuesday if I wasn't so tired. Mainly planning to just watch Sword of the Stranger but it wasn't on first so I opted to go home and catch up on much needed sleep instead.

Awww,

So not many people watched Sword of Stranger? Shame, as it is well made anime movie. Way better than Agito, heaps better.

Yes it was quite a good movie. But by the end there was I think maybe 8 people left if that.

On the plus side I didn't have anyones backface in my way so less in this case is certainly more. :)

The sad thing, Mendes, is that you missed out on a couple of good films because you based the entire playlist on what was played first. Atory was asleep on his feet, so he had an excuse. Then again, Atory looks like that all the time, anyway. It's a bit like how I always look overweight and old. Except in my case, it really is true. 8)

In a diplomatic sense, it probably was a good choice. The computer is finally being switched on and the amount of yelling at home decreased. So no regrets.
