Dhumahn's Great Avcon Shopping Spree - Ver 2.0.08

by Dhumahn » Wed Jun 11, 2008 11:15 pm

Split from here.

My cash pile for the 'con is looking very healthy right now... who wants to have first dibs as to how much I will spend this year?

True, very true. Maybe we should split this and have an ongoing theme going in the lead-up to the con (it's usually better than the con itself anyway).

No wonder that vendor loves you.

Idea - We give Greg the money for what we wanted to get so he can get it for us and we avoid the AvCon fee.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, this year. The costs of entry to AVCon have gone up, and I don't know if there will be anything I really want to see.

I really want to see Manifest, though.

In a way, yes and no. It depends on both who knows about it, as well as what part of AvCon we are having a go at.

I blame the war for the pimp hat's shortcomings. I still respect the pimp hat and anyone else who takes on that position.
The entirety is getting worse each year but I don't see any way they can improve it as it's a vendor issue.

The problem with AVCon is that it's become popular with a certain element that go out of their way to ruin everything for everyone else. Also last year suffered from many technical problems and lack of decent anime (which could be easily fixed if they didn't insist on only choosing stuff that matches the theme. I think the theme should be "anime and video games".)

But last year they'd fixed the registration problems.
Mel Gibson's remake of The Life of Brian is nowhere near as funny as the original.

I feel it important to make it known that I did not attend AVCon last year. Nor do I have any intention of attending this year. 8)

Being stuck in a small room(s) filled with Anonymous, narutards, Gaiafags, awful cosplayers*, and other assorted scum all for the purpose of increasing your power level doesn't really appeal to me.

*Atory, you know I like good cosplay as much as any horny weeaßoo. 'AVCon', 'cosplay' and 'good' can't be used in the same sentence.

For the majority I'd agree, but everyone has to start somewhere. We are getting quite a few good cosplayers these days... unfortunately we are getting a lot more bad cosplayers as well. 'Tis the main reason I want to check out Manifest someday. I've been told that's where all the really good ones are. Based on some of the people I know I would agree, others I wouldn't.

I didn't notice too many bogans... then again I was in reg at the start where all the weeaboos are scrambling to get in and then at the videogames where all the nerds are stinking up the place.

The bogans trashed the lift, harassed the cosplayers and forced those of us with functioning brains to switch PictoChat chatrooms every five minutes. I guess they mostly hung around the bar and vendors area since I saw a lot of them and that's where I was most of the time.

edit: hopefully the bogan influx was only caused by last year's theme and it won't happen this year.

I'm doing the registration desks this year and I can only say theres rumors of changes to registration, to make it even more better than last years, (itd be improved cause Im there anyway :P) but I will miss Mitchell's antics as the convenor especially that scene with midori days puppet... He's more of a humor value than anything I suppose... that and I shall miss strangling his neck like I did in 2006.... But I'm hoping, really hoping Mark might be a little, little bit better... if not, next year there better be a new, proper convenor, someone who know what theyre doing... someone did suggest me, but that was a off handed remark about Mitchell not listening apparently.

The hoodies will be decent this year - they're going back to the supplier from 2006.

Yes, very plain (or plane in this case - I know it's supposed to be a spaceship, but it flies, so I reserve the right to call it a plane).

Probably won't be seeing too many bogans again this year (since I'll probably be to busy having conversations with the vendors, as well as keeping people like bazza and madman away from the kiddies 8) )

Admittedly, Mitchell was a good person as being the voice of AvCon.

Drew and Connel built AvCon and had the respect of the proprietors, they were organised, they cared. At present, details come out late, proprietors are contacted too close to the event and are somwhat discontent, the quiz night has been rigged lately and is a shambles to boot, the cosplay has gone down in quality. And apparently there was a bogan epidemic last year.

Simply put, I don't see why I should pay $35 along with food and drink expenses to go there to buy/watch/play something I could at any other time of the year. Back in 2003-2004, AvCon had a novelty, something exclusive. It doesn't anymore.

However, I do hope Dutchy brings the standard up this year. If not, we can blame the pie.

What about being hailed for a successful AVCon?

Would you at least consider recommending some stuff for the screening rooms if some of us do end up doing this?

running a convention is hard work, one does not simply wake up in the morning and say hey, lets have a con.... there is a lot of work involved.

I agree that it may not be 100% efficient, but we do see that certain tasks have an order that they have to keep to, you can't announce dates etc until you have a venue for exaple.

then looking further into it, different coordinators work different areas, for instance a gaming tournament is the work of the gaming coordinator, not the whole of the committee. I would like to say that many members here should give volunteering a go and if they want things changed, do a good job this year, work your way to a recognised member by pushing to get into a sub committee next year and bring up suggestions that way.

I have ups and downs feelings for avcon, but i do reccomend no matter what, if you want change also attempt something (i.e. volunteering) yourself!

I've already volunteered for this year... stating all I've done in previous years... and they haven't even sent me a confirmation e-mail.
The only way I get recognized in their group is by my name... be it good (usually about registration) or bad (usually about last year's website).

Did you end up doing the highest purchase at the auction? Simeon told me you went pretty high for a certain item.

No, I didn't, that was reserved for "Mitchell".....I could not believe how people were quite literally emptying their wallets to see his hair shaven off...

...but mine was the best quality one :D

Yes, kissing a maid does seem better, even at $155. How much did they pay for Mitchell to get shaved?

Not a clue. I left after a mate spent 60 dollars on the last box of Pocky. Then again, with the scarcity of food this year it was just about the only box in the first place.
Although I don’t know about the directions at 4:51.
It’s commonly known when you look north in Japan East is to your left. Please don’t try to correct that sentence. It lasts only for a second but I wouldn’t expect a mistake like that.

I'm glad I don't have his following. I got to flirt with a lot of volunteers and artists this year though.

I'll make sure to tell Louise to her face.

Also, I'd rather get my hair shaved (it grows back after all)

Totaled myself from AVcon and on merchandise alone i estimate spending around $650...

there was also entry, and food and booze on top of that so avcon cost me about $800! What was your total Greg?

Manifest is coming, hope for some last minute extra spending money to come from mr tax return!
