Flinders university FACT Society

by Flindersfactsociety » Wed Jun 11, 2008 12:48 pm

Hi AJAS people.

I'm at flinders and we're about to start a film, animation, comics and TV society. Obviously manga and anime are going to play a huge part. We hope to have a anime/manga night weekly or fortnightly as well as much more. We also want to start stuff on weekends (if we're allowed).
This will in no way clash with AJAS on tuesday. Infact we want to form a good relationship with you - netowrk as we are with numerous other organisations and businesses.

So if you go to flinders, live close or just want to rock up whne things eventually start - do so!

Our first meeting will occur in semester 2 on Thursday the 31st of July.

The details are

Location - Kelly morris Room (behind the Blue Duck Cafe)
Time - 4.10pm
Date -31/07/2008.

The first meeting will have some formal procedures that include agreeing to the constituition, setting up membership fees, stating aims, voting/volunteering for roles etc.

Importantly there will be free stuff.

So far we have 2 sponsors on board - Pulp fiction comics & Adelaide Comics Centre. We will of course be getting more (or at least trying)

There is most likely going to be a stall (even though we aren't a club yet) during the opening of 2nd term.

The free stuff we have scored so far

- "Animatrix" - 9 short anime film from the realm of the matrix
- "Cassahan" - 70's style anime
- "Last blood" - Hong Kong Action film
- 2 x "Broken Wings" - Israeli Drama
- 2 x "joi the white Albino" - Norwegian drama
- "Psycho Beach Party"

- 3 x XMEN posters
- Sin City poster
- Zombie comic poster
- 20 assorted free comic book day and 50c comics, including first ever "battle star galactica" issues (#0).

- Unspeciied or determined amounts from Pulp Fiction and Adelaid Comics Centre
- several Dvds from a lecturer in screen studies.

I will continue to add to this collection. So there will be more for members.

Any comments, inquiries just ask.

Thank you.

Figures. You didn't even pay for AJAS either, Bazza.

I saw you mentioning the creation of this club to the guys at Pulp Fiction. You've certainly got the passion and mindset to do it. Hope it goes well for you.

Same here. Having two clubs operating here in adelaide will hopefully be good for all (and just may get the numbers needed to overthrow "them people that run AvCon").

The fact that they charge will be interesting though, as is their choice of Thursdays for meetings (clashes with late-night trade, always a problem in this state).

I'll have to pop in sometime.

Well, it's actually a decent choice considering the possible conflictions/detractions.

Monday - Day of apathy
Tuesday - AJAS
Friday - UniSAGA/Evac/Late night city
Saturday + Sunday - The wilder days + the comic book crew have their session on Saturdays at the Grace Emily

So they were restricted to Wednesday or Thursday already. I wouldn't consider the late-night suburbs to be a detraction. At least places in that area will still be open once they're done.

As for membership fees - well, we needed 20 paying members. I don't see what the fuss is since those that actually care paid the annual fee.

PS. AvCon - R.I.P since 2004

Thanks for the support so far guys.

We will be attempting to do things most of the weeks, but in regards to animation/anime we choose Thursday (or wednesday) due to the issues Last Exile has listed. We don't want to clash (thus no tuesdays or fridays plus we want to network and share resourcers not compete) plus we have to take into consideration public transport and what people have on timetables. Thursday seems good and hopefully we manage to work it out this way.

On membership fees - we need them. A lot of things like film screenings requires us to pay to show it legally (not for profit though). We're getting things from our sponsors so that people actually get something for their membership.

Anyway so far thanks for the support. Later on down the road we'll definately need some pointerson what to screen etc. I'm thinking OVA's.

ANd as a measure of thanks to your support and future support -i'll chuck in a dvd or manga.

Either Death Note 1 or the animatrix.

If I'm feeling human enough, tomorrow night, I will somehow convince Jim that this is a good idea. The only stumbling block, after that, will be that this is at Flinders Uni and that we live in Campbelltown.

The more clubs dealing in this stuff, the merrier, I say. My collection is open to the FACT society, if they want anything to screen.

Woolworths prevents me from attending. The money helps hold back the annoyance in last minute shift changes.

At least I'll be there, if nothing else (it's actually not that far from the main bus stop on campus, only about a minute walk).

Well, that was fun, had about 15 people show up (including mappy, jim and myself). Hopefully they stay together, so that we can pull a coup on "them guys from **con" 8)

Farking weather and traffic. We got there pretty late.... And leaving, the weather got worse. Like cannot-see-out-of-the-car worse. We were driving down Goodwood Road using the gutter as a guide to our progress, because we couldn't even see the tail lights of the car ahead.... :(

But yeah.... Hopefully this club will go places. :)

Hello.

Apologies for the late response.
We'll finally everything i've pushed for and done has worked.
We are now officially affiliated and have been given exacxtly what we wanted regarding screening time and space.
We'll be screening asap.

However we need to discuss the animation screenings with you - as you've got the anime and can guide in whats appropriate for us this year.

Also regarding the rightstuf.com - is it a bit cheaper for manga? Haven't looked into it to much.

If so - i am going to be down for some titles.

Thanks heaps.

Well, the manga is relatively cheaper, unless the exchange rate goes too much further down, then it's anyone's guess.

Hmm things did not go well this year and to be honest i don't think they really will, university in Australia lacks in culture and i think this is a long term problem.

But...i am still going to go with this club, even if it's just me in the screenings, like a couple times lol.

Anyway i plan to get all the planning and work out by February as i am overloading and also will be working a little bit.

Even if this club has 5-10 people rocking up to screenings that's cool.

I plan to have 2-3 screenings a week.
1 Night will be devoted to animation, namely anime. I am also considering booking a small room right next to the theatre on these nights which will be for comic creation, drawing as well as possibly gaming. I am going to have to work out what supplies are needed as most likely these will come from my own pocket (anyone or groups giving money or support is highly unlikely). However, this isn't guaranteed and is only a idea for now.

I love anime but i am behiond the times, and i can't run and control every night >.< So if anyone is interested in screening or helping out that is cool, or even giving me shows as they come out - low bandwith T.T

We can screen anything provided it isn't graphically violent or pornographic. We can show R18+ things though. On these nights ID's will be checked and an alternate room used for those underaged.

I am up for anything being showned genre wise and we can see things weekly or in clumps.

So yeah feel free to comment.

Right now i'm the only one running it so i can't make promises or guarantees, but i'll try real hard.

* Anime nights will never clash with AJAS and Never be run on weekends or fridays.
