Like yeah, it's based on Frank Miller's 300, originally titled 300 Spartans. About 300 Spartans who hold off a Persian (or whatever country) army of 10000 for the hope the rest of Greece can reinforce themselves before too late. So you know this film will kick ass.

Battle of Thermopylae 480 BC, 7000 Greeks led by 300 Spartan Peers facing off 250,000 Persian multinational army. For 3 days the Greeks held off until Persian gold manage to make one sheperd to betray the Greeks, enabling the Persian Army to get around the pass. King Leonidas, commander of the Greeks ordered general retreat except his own immediate command but a contingent of phalanx from Thespia refused to obey. Together they delayed the Persians for few more moments, until every Greek are slain.

Xerxes was so enraged by this battle which cost him 2 family members (his brothers) that he ordered body of Spartan King to be beheaded and put on pike. War historians estimated about 8000-10,000 Persian troops including Xerxes personal elite division, the Immortals were killed in this action.

The Athenians using this precious time to flee with her fleet which emerge later to give Persian a decisive blow in Salamis.
