Spambot epidemic.

by Bazza » Sun Dec 10, 2006 8:21 am

(100% serious post)

In regards to this.

Me and Phill on another forum have discovered that replying to spambots indicates to the spambot's operator it has an audience and will attract more of them to the forum, in the same way of replying to a spam email (even if it's with &%^$ J00!!!11) encourages more to fill up your trash bin. Even opening the thread has an effect as they watch the 'thread views' number with their 1337h4x0r programs.

Disabling guest posting didn't work too well as they just went through the sign up procedure and posted. Quite annoying really.

Thought you guys might like to know. :)

I'm surprised you guys actually get ones that post... I've been lucky so far... as soon as my bots active they are DELETED!!!

But then again I'm the moderator from hell... the grammar Nazi that edits everyone's posts.

I can't delete the accounts but I will delete every post I get to first. And with Jim on when I'm not, that's 24 hour a day moderation. 8)

And all replies to the spammer's thread are now here, so b&spammer is still well and truly b&.

And to think people on the internet have no better way to conduct marketing .

"Yes the human race continues to advance in all fields of endeavour ... including being annoying !"
I must feel proud about the things I choose ...,

Be it Ero-games , doujinshi , or clothes ; its all the SAME !

Wow, something more annoying than the desu army. They flood my email with all these stupid 'Return to Sender' or delivery failed crap. So much for being spam free. -_-
Disgusting...

We can always make the forum 'Admin Activation' instead of 'User Email Activation'. :shades:
You can't post till your account is activated. :shifty:

Some other anime forums do this. :hmmm:
Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day,
Set him on fire and he'll be warm the rest of his life. :p

That would be a good idea for this forum. I was thinking that myself.

In the hour ive been awake, the GetOnIt forums have gotten 4 new spampot signups, none have posted though...

Out of the 1600 or so members on the forums, roughly one third are spam bots, the last 6 pages in the members list are all spambots apart from the occasional legit member.

The mods haven't been thorough enough in vetting the subscriptions, then, or there simply aren't enough mods for the volume the forum takes. I've always made as many people as I possibly can be mods on mailing lists I run. In short, nuke the site from orbit, its the only way to be sure. 8)

What the net needs is an active anti-spambot(email/BB/irc/blog/firewall) combat system like in GITS.

Fry the suckers
